In Balagne, some dives become truly unforgettable experiences. Among the region's most iconic sites, the B17 in Calvi is undoubtedly one of the most fascinating.
With Algajola Sport Nature, located between Calvi and L'Île-Rousse, you can set off to discover this legendary Second World War wreck resting on the Corsican seabed. This unique dive combines history, underwater exploration and Mediterranean biodiversity.
Open to certified divers, the B17 dive in Calvi is now considered one of the finest wreck dives in Corsica.
The story of the Calvi B-17
The B17 Flying Fortress was an American heavy bomber used during the Second World War. The aircraft that now lies near Calvi ditched at sea in 1944 after a mission over Italy.
Following a mechanical problem, the crew was forced to make an emergency ditching off the coast of Balagne. Fortunately, all crew members were rescued.
The aircraft then slowly sank and came to rest on a sandy seabed at a depth of about 28 metres, where it still lies today.
Over time, the wreck has become a genuine underwater historical site and an iconic dive for enthusiasts.
An exceptional dive in the Balagne
The Calvi B17 is particularly impressive because the aircraft is still easy to recognise underwater. Several parts are still visible during the dive:
- the bomber's wings
- the radial engines
- parts of the fuselage
- the cockpit structure
The wreck rests on a clear seabed, so you can see it in its entirety when visibility is good - which is often the case in the Balagne.
The area is also rich in marine life. Around the wreck, divers can see:
- shoals of damselfish
- white seabream and gilthead bream
- sometimes groupers
- many small Mediterranean species
Over time, the Calvi B17 has become a true artificial reef, home to rich biodiversity.
